How it works

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters: BMI = weight ÷ height². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m gives 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.

Standard adult categories are: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is normal weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. We also estimate the healthy weight range for your height.

Tips

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Muscular people may show a high BMI without excess fat, while older adults may have more body fat at a normal BMI.

For a fuller picture of health, combine BMI with waist measurement, activity level, and a conversation with your doctor.

FAQ

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful general estimate but does not directly measure body fat. Athletes, pregnant people, and the elderly may get misleading results, so use it as one of several indicators.

What is a healthy BMI?

For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy range. Values below or above this may carry increased health risks.

How do I use pounds and inches?

This calculator uses kilograms and centimeters. To convert: divide pounds by 2.205 for kg, and multiply inches by 2.54 for cm.
