How it works

This calculator uses a common guideline of roughly half your body weight in ounces of water per day. For a 160 lb person, that's about 80 oz as a baseline.

It then adds about 12 oz for every 30 minutes of exercise to replace fluids lost through sweat, and increases the total for hot or dry climates using your climate factor.

The result is converted into cups, liters, and milliliters so you can track your intake however you prefer.

Tips

Spread your intake throughout the day rather than drinking large amounts at once.

Foods like fruits and vegetables also contribute to hydration, so your drinking needs may be slightly lower.

Increase water during illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or high-altitude activity, and listen to your thirst.

FAQ

Is 8 glasses of water a day accurate?

The '8 glasses' rule is a rough guideline. Actual needs vary with body size, activity, and climate, which is why this calculator personalizes the estimate.

Does coffee or tea count toward hydration?

Most beverages, including coffee and tea, contribute to your daily fluid intake. Their mild diuretic effect is generally offset by their water content.

Can I drink too much water?

Yes. Drinking excessive water in a short time can dilute blood sodium (hyponatremia). Spread intake across the day and consult a doctor if you have kidney or heart conditions.
